Roughneck mini and micro tools. A big hit in small spaces10th October 2017
When it comes to hand tools, bigger isn’t always better. In fact, there are many situations where bigger can actually be worse.
Take excavation projects in the utilities and infrastructure / highway maintenance sectors. Frequently operatives in these areas are faced with the need to dig in confined spaces where freedom of movement is limited such as at the bottom of a trench or pit.
Or they may be required to pass through a restrictive access point like a manhole.
In these instances, a full-sized tool can be at best cumbersome and awkward, and at worst ineffective and even dangerous.
Taking tool design to new dimensions
Traditionally, most of us involved in the utilities and infrastructure / highway maintenance sectors have overcome these spatial challenges by adopting a ‘mend it and make do’ type approach.
A shovel with its handle cut in half for instance can be a workable if somewhat less than ergonomically ideal solution.
You may be pleased to know however that there are better alternatives out there. As a business with a firm focus on innovation and on supporting the needs of tool users across many different and diverse sectors, Olympia Tools has developed a range of mini and micro products.
These products, which are sold under our Roughneck brand, are made from the highest quality materials and have been expertly engineered to offer all the performance of their full-sized counterparts – only a smaller scale.
The Roughneck Micro Shovel
Measuring just 685mm (27”) from the tip of its blade to the end of its handle, the Roughneck Micro Shovel is an ideal tool for use in confined spaces.
Being small in size but big on performance, it’s also well suited to shovelling material from jumbo bags and an ideal tool to carry in the car, van or caravan for use in emergencies.
Further features and benefits include:
· Available with both round and square point blades
· Blade made from heavy-duty pressed steel, hardened and heat treated for maximum durability
· Strong fibreglass handle
· Double injected, full-sized ‘D’ grip ensures optimum ease of use and user comfort.
The Roughneck Mini Shovel
The Roughneck Mini Shovel builds on the success and popularity of the Roughneck Micro Shovel.
It offers benefits from all the same features and the same head but has a longer handle which makes the tool 850mm (34”) in length.
This longer handle makes the Roughneck Mini Shovel better suited to the needs of those who will be digging in confined spaces rather than shovelling.
It’s also a popular choice with the metal detecting community!
The Roughneck Micro Fork
The Roughneck Micro Fork is a true industrial grade fork – only smaller.
It measures just 740mm (29”) in length, which again makes it ideal for use in confined spaces.
It’s also ideally suited to the needs of those who might find using a full-sized fork difficult (for instance due to health reasons).
Roughneck Micro Picks and Mattocks
The Roughneck Micro Picks and Mattocks complement their full-sized counterparts.
Designed specifically for use in confined space such as in trenches or between beddings, these micro tools are just 380mm (15”) in length.
Further features and benefits include:
· Heads made from drop forged steel, hardened and tempered for optimum durability with a black paint finish
· Strong but lightweight double injected fibreglass handles. Entire tool weighs just 400g
· Fits into most tool bags
· Two product options available – the Roughneck Micro Pick Mattock, which has a pointed tip at one and a cutting blade at the other, and the Roughneck Cutter Mattock, which features a cutting blade at both ends.
The Roughneck mini and micro tools are part of a wider range of products offered by Olympia Tools to meet the needs of the utilities, infrastructure / highway maintenance and building industries.
Other products available include trenching shovels, drainage shovels and our safety shovel and graters, which are designed to reduce the risks associated with striking hidden utilities when digging.
In addition, our mini and micro products help to highlight an important point about Olympia Tools’ approach to hand tool design and development.
Namely that when it comes to innovation, we don’t just like to think big.
Sometimes, we also like to think small…
